Lothar D. Francke, 94, a resident of Main Street, Readsboro, died unexpectedly on Tuesday, May 4, 2021 at his residence.
Born in Berlin, Germany on January 22, 1927, he was the son of the late Erich and Elfreda (Hoffman) Francke. Lothar received his education in the Berlin schools and attended dentistry school in Berlin.
During World War II he served in the German Army. During that time he was captured by the Russians and taken to a concentration camp in Siberia. At the end of the war he was released and walked from Siberia back to his home in Berlin.
In 1950 he married the former Winnifred Stiedenrod and in 1955 they left Germany to come to the United States where they settled in Brooklyn, NY. During the rest of his working life Lothar worked as a dental technician in the New York City area until 1989 when they retired to Readsboro.
Lothar was an avid hiker and belonged to the Interstate Hiking Club of New York and New Jersey.
Survivors include his wife, Winnifred Francke and a daughter, Suzanne Francke, both of Readsboro and a son, Bernhard Francke of Valley Cottage, NY.
Funeral services will be held at St. Joachim Parish 342 Tunnel St, Readsboro, VT 05350 on May 22nd at 11 am.
