SHAFTSBURY
Lew H. Levin, 86, a resident of Cleveland Avenue, Shaftsbury, died peacefully on Friday, January 18,2019 at Bennington Health & Rehabilitation surrounded by his family.
Born in Rutland on July 24, 1932, he was the son of the late Reuben and Lula (Hewes) Levin. He received his education in Bennington. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War.
Lew married the former Jill Nelson on May 26, 1955 at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church.
Lew worked at Stanley Tools in Shaftsbury for over 45 years. He was a Shop Steward for the Union and helped negotiate several contracts, he also helped many coworkers with their grievances. Lew also painted and papered for many people in the area.
Lew and his family owned and operated Lilly's Food & Drink in Bennington, for 10+ years. He was proud of the fact that Lilly's was not just a Bar and that all who came in were soon considered part of the family, to many, this was their only family.
Lew was a Life Member of the American Legion Post 13 and the VFW Post 1332 in Bennington. For several years Lew served as Athletic Director and primary fund-raiser for the Post 13 Baseball program. In the early 70's, when the Norshaft Little League was struggling financially, Lew raised the necessary funds to keep this program going.
Lew was community minded and often didn't want the notoriety that came with it. Some of his beneficiaries were the Bennington Rescue Squad, the Ronald McDonald House, Big Brothers / Big Sisters, PAVE and Lilly's purchased the first bicycle for the Bennington Police Department's Bike Unit. For years, Lew served as the Town Service Officer. The family met and helped many "characters" who were passing thru town, especially during the late 60's and 70's.
Besides his family, Lew enjoyed hunting, horse-racing, playing cards and music.
Survivors include his wife, Jill Levin of Shaftsbury; five children, Maria (Robert) DeLuca of North Bennington, Peter (Tatum) of Shaftsbury, Corrinne Levin of Shaftsbury, Lianne (Jason) Rush of Bennington and Lew "Chip" Levin Jr. of Shaftsbury.
