Katy Berard Leonard (Berard)

January 24, 1969 — February 15, 2021

Katy Berard Leonard, 52, of Niskayuna, NY, passed away peacefully at Crescent Manor Rehabilitation Center in Bennington, Vermont, on February 15, 2021, after a long battle with the progressive genetic neuro-degenerative Huntington's Disease.
Born in Bennington, Vermont on January 24, 1969, she was the daughter of the late John L. and Lois Berard. Katy attended Bennington, Vermont schools and graduated from Mt. Anthony High School in 1987. She graduated from the University of Vermont at Burlington with a Bachelor of Arts in English in 1991.
Directly after college Katy worked at a lodge near Yellowstone National Park. Then for several years she was Store Manager at Basket Barn in Manchester, Vermont. Later, she worked in various administrative roles including positions at the State University of New York Research Foundation ("SUNY Press") and WMHT (public television). Finally, after earning a Master of Library Science Degree from the State University of New York at Albany, Katy worked briefly as a Librarian for the Schenectady County Public Library System. She was always reading, learning and continuing her education.
Katy was married to Daniel J. Leonard for 25 years. With Dan she traveled to all six settled continents, where she was thrilled to explore and immerse in both current and ancient (archeological) civilizations.
Katy had a way about her that endeared her to all who met her. She had a beautiful smile and she just loved to laugh. She said for her laughter was a big part of the "meaning of life." Katy enjoyed music, "classic" movies (one of her favorites was "Singin' in the Rain"), gardening, crocheting and yoga. She also loved her cats and rescue dogs (Brittany Spaniels). Katy will be most remembered for her strong will and perseverance with life's challenges.
Katy is survived by her loving husband Dan, sisters Darlene Cleveland (Stephen), Susan Wright (Steven), and a brother Robert (Linda), sister-in-law Mary Leonard and mother-in-law and father-in-law Betty and Tom Leonard. Katy is pre-deceased by her sister Lucy Kingsbury and brother Steven Berard.
Katy's family offers special thanks to the nurses, LNA's and caregivers at Crescent Manor and at Laurel Lake (Lee, MA), and all the medical staff that helped her along the way.
As a long-term member of the Unitarian Universalist Society of Schenectady (Schenectady, NY), a memorial service will be held at 11AM on March 13, 2021, with burial alongside her family in Parklawn Cemetery in Bennington, Vermont to be held later in the spring.
