Kathryn Womersley (Smith)

September 18, 1923 — April 9, 2022

Kathryn (Kit) Smith Womersley passed away on Saturday, April 9, 2022, at home in Bennington, VT, surrounded by the love of her three daughters.

Kit was born in Lakewood, Ohio on September 18, 1923, the eldest of three children, to James and Vera Smith. After graduating from high school in Akron, Ohio, she attended Kent State University for a year, then worked as a secretary for a year. While she contemplated her future, WWII erupted and she joined the Navy (Waves), returning to Akron University to complete her education.

Kit graduated in 1948 with a BA in Home Economics. While attending Akron U., she was a member of the Delta Gamma sorority. It was during her time at Akron U. that she met George, whom she would marry in 1949 - a love story that would last for 70 years, until George's death, at age 97, in 2019.

During their long life together, they raised three daughters - Susan, Constance and Cynthia. While she was adamant that she would have five sons, Kit was very happy to have had her daughters. She also loved her grandchildren, Sean, Vera and Austin, and great-grandchildren, Cyrus and Adrian.

Kit remained devoted to her sister, Josie (Joan Farrell) and brother, Jim (Dr. James Smith), as well as to the many friends she and George gathered into their circle over many years and not a few moves. She created loving homes in Virginia, Ohio, New Jersey, and Vermont.

Kit was a loving wife and mother, happiest in the background and known for her fabulous cooking and sunny nature. Her love of cooking was infectious and all three daughters followed suit. She was drawn to nature and instilled a deep and lasting passion for the outdoors in all three of her daughters.

Early on, she was the instigator of Ohio winter breakfast hikes - creating lasting memories of bread toasted over coals, eggs and bacon cooked in a cast iron pan, and brisk hikes in the snow, through Ohio's lovely park system, her daughters proudly sporting her hand-knitted nose warmers and wool socks.

While most of their friends opted for warmer climes in their retirement years, Kit and George headed north, falling in love with Vermont (and Bennington) and remaining there for over 35 years.

Kit was a loving and open person, and is held with warmth and love in the memories of all who knew her. She is greatly loved and missed.
