Judith Doris Rosenthal

January 8, 1928 — April 6, 2021

Williamtown, MA- Judith Doris Rosenthal passed away at home in Williamstown, Massachusetts on April 6, 2021. She was 93, and died peacefully with loved ones by her side. Judy was cremated, and her ashes were scattered along the shores of a river along the Massachusetts-Vermont border, as she requested.

In addition to her three children, Judy leaves behind six grandchildren, one great-grandchild, two nieces, one nephew and a wide community of close friends. Her sister, her former husband and another nephew predeceased her.

Judy was born on January 8, 1928 to Esther and Louis Rosen in New York City. She married Leon Aaron Rosenthal in 1947, and raised two daughters, Barbara and Elizabeth, and one son, David. She attended Sarah Lawrence College and Barnard College, and was awarded a Bachelor of Arts in archeology by the former institution and a master's degree in special education by the latter. Judy became a beloved teacher of third grade special education students in Yorktown Heights, New York, where she worked until she retired.

She lived a long and fulfilling life, actively and avidly supporting the rights of disenfranchised people. She participated in civil rights marches (among them the I Have a Dream March), numerous anti-war marches and a variety of environmental activities. She tutored prisoners at Sing Sing Correctional Facility and taught computer skills to students at Pace University. Later in life, she was a proud member of the Raging Grannies.

An adventurous and intrepid soul, Judy traveled extensively, facing down a cobra during a hike in Nepal and walking across a large swath of Spain, among many other journeys. She loved to hike and kayak, and spent many hours paddling her beloved Hudson River. Towards the end of her life, Judy contended with numerous physical challenges. We are grateful for the fact that she was able to reside with her eldest daughter during this period, who ministered to her with love and care.

Judy was a loyal and loving friend, mother and grandmother, and she will be deeply missed.
