Joseph "Joe" Russell, 69, beloved husband of Yumiko (Kuroda) Russell, passed away in Bennington, VT on May 4, 2017 surrounded by his family. Son of the late Joseph William and Anastasia (Ducker) Russell, he was born in New York City on October 6, 1947. The family moved to Woodford, VT in 1960. Joe graduated from Bennington Catholic High School and Southern Vermont College. He enlisted in the US Air Force and served most of his five years in Japan where he met and married his wife. Joe returned to Bennington and lived there until moving to North Bennington 12 years ago. He worked for the US Postal Service for more than 30 years where he cheerfully served his business and residential customers many of whom remained friends after his retirement. Joe worked odds jobs after retiring and landed one at the VT Welcome Center where his outgoing personality shined.
In addition to his wife of 47 years, he is survived by his daughters, Anne Whelan (William) and Emily, sons Robert (Stephanie) and Mark (Marissa), grandchildren, Isabel and Ryan Whelan, Jack Thurber, and Alex, Matthew, and Benjamin Russell, and siblings, Loretta Catozzi (James), Eileen Russell (Michael Zanarini), Michael Russell (Roxanne), Thomas Russell (Penny), Mary Drzyzga (Greg), and Jane Smith (Stuart). His brother, Gregory (Karen Otto), predeceased him. He is also survived by numerous nieces, nephews, grand nieces, grand nephews, and Russell, Ryan, and Pearlstein family cousins, and his cat, Chibi.
A memorial service will be held on June 10 from 12:00 to 2:00 pm. at E. P. Mahar & Son, Inc. Funeral Home 628 Main St Bennington VT 05201. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Joe's name to the American Legion Post 13 255 Northside Drive Bennington VT 05201.
