Joseph Anthony Mintrone, 77, a resident of Old Military Road in Pownal, VT died Monday May 2, 2022 at the Albany Medical Center in Albany, NY surrounded by his family and friends.
He made a surprise entry into the world at the family home in Flushing, N.Y. on June 13, 1944. He was the son of the late Louis and Genevieve (Cernovsky) Mintrone. Joe received his education in New York and was a graduate of Holy Cross High School in Bayside, NY.
He married the love of his life, the former Concetta "Connie" Cilento on April 25, 1965 at St. Kevin's Roman Catholic Church in Flushing, NY. They just celebrated their 57th wedding anniversary.
At an early age Joe worked with his father in the produce business, L.M. & Sons Produce. He eventually owned and operated his own produce business, with three trucks on the road delivering to different business' in New York City. In 1971 he moved to Vermont with his wife Connie, and their two children along with his brother Charlie and his wife "Bobbi, and their three children, opening the Steak Barn Restaurant in Bennington. For the last 48 years Joe owned and operated C&J Meat and Produce Company, a meat, fish and produce wholesale business serving NY, VT and MA, only recently stopping when his health declined.
In earlier years Joe was an N-gauge train hobbyist, designing and building extensive layouts for friends and family to enjoy. He also enjoyed raising loyal German Shepard's. He took great pleasure in boating with his wife Connie and their two German Shepard's, spending many weekends living on their boat on Lake Champlain. He had a wanderlust for travel and adventure, when his children were young, they traveled extensively throughout the US and Mexico in their travel trailer and Cherokee, accompanied by their dogs and cat. They also enjoyed spending time at their Time Share in Disney World and Cancun, Mexico.
Joe was well known for his bold personality, his crazy humor, stubbornness, love of fast cars, his hard work ethics and the love of his family. Those lucky enough to have tried it, loved the "fish sauce" he created every Christmas Eve for the "Italian Feast of Seven Fishes"!
Survivors include his wife, Concetta "Connie" Mintrone of Pownal, VT. A daughter, Jeanne Mintrone (Brian Eggsware) and a son, Joseph Mintrone and his wife Tracy of Pownal, VT. Two grandchildren, Antonio and Riley Mintrone of Tampa, Florida. A brother Charlie Mintrone and his wife "Bobbi" of Florida. A sister Theresa Aprile and her husband Gennaro of N.J. and FL. Along with many nieces, nephews, great nieces, great nephews and cousins living across the country in CT, DC, FL, MD, NC, NJ, OH, SC and Italy. He was pre-deceased by a sister Antoinette Stump and her husband, Phillip.
Friends may call at the Mahar and Son Funeral Home on Thursday May 5, from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m.
The funeral mass will be held on Friday at 11:00 a.m. at Sacred Heart Saint Francis de Sales Church in Bennington, VT.
