JOSEPH ANTON OBITUARY
BENNINGTON, VERMONT
Mr. Joseph T. Anton, age 96, a resident of North Bennington, VT died on Thursday March 30, 2017 as a result of injuries he sustained in an automobile accident in Hoosick NY.

He was born on March 2, 1921 in Brooklyn, NY and was the son of Thomas and Rose (Barbarite) Antonucci.. Joseph's life centered around his beloved wife, Patricia, his family , his church and friends. In his former parish in New York, he was a lector, member of the parish council, and certified Catechist, member of the Legion of Mary, and President of the Holy Names Society. Joseph was also a member of the Knights of Columbus.
At Sacred Heart St. Francis de Sales, Bennington, he was a lector at daily mass, and an altar server at funerals. AS A Eucharistic Minister he brought Holy Communion to the Vermont Veterans Home and homebound folks in Bennington. He was also a member of the Thomas Merton Society.
Joseph served as a local disaster volunteer for the Bennington Chapter of the Red Cross, worked in the kitchen at the Senior Center and served on the Bennington Court Diversion Board.
He was a Cum Laude graduate of Queens College and received his Masters Degree from Long Island University.

Joe was a World War II veteran and served the country from July 1942 until December of 1945. He attained the rank of Technical Sergeant. He was called out of the Army Air Corp to serve on an intelligence mission in the European Theatre under the direction of the War Department. He received two battle commendations for the Rhineland and Central Europe Campaigns. He was a member of the American Legion and the Veterans of Foreign Wars in Bennington. As did many other Vermont Veterans, Joe felt honored to receive the Vermont Distinguished Service Medal for duty in combat theaters in addition to the Vermont Veterans Medal.
He held managerial positions in several companies before becoming the Director of Security for the Kearfott Aerospace and Marine Systems Division of the Singer Company which manufactured aerospace products for the military. His responsibilities encompassed all six facilities in New Jersey and those across the country and in England and Belgium.

While employed Joseph taught at Jersey City State College's Saturday Semester. He also taught a graduate course at Long Island University and lectured at St. John's University in New York. After retirement he taught at Southern Vermont College for ten years. He developed the Corporate Security Management Core Courses for SVC which were necessary for a degree in that discipline.

For the achievements and contributions to the security profession, Joseph was honored by the Academy of Security Educators and was made a Distinguished Fellow.
He also received an outstanding Alumnae Award from Long Island University in Recognition of Academic and professional excellence. He was alive member of the American Society of Industrial Security.

As a young man Joseph played semi-professional baseball. He received tryout notices from both the NY Giants and the Brooklyn Dodgers but was unable to follow through due to his entry in the military service in July 1942.

Joseph leaves his beloved family, his two sons: Thomas and granddaughter, Jennifer and his second son, David and grandson Vincent and step-granddaughter Mellissa. He was predeceased by his wife Patricia and son John Joseph.

A Prayer Service will be held on Thursday, April 6, at the Mahar and Son Funeral Home, 628 Main St, Bennington at 10:30 AM, followed by a Mass of Christian Death and Burial at Sacred Heart St. Francis de Sales Church in Bennington at 11:00AM.
Interment will follow in Park Lawn Cemetery.
Friends may call at the Mahar and Son Funeral Home on Wednesday evening from 4 until 7PM.
Members of Knights of Columbus are asked to meet to pay their respects at the funeral home Wednesday at 5:30PM, the American Legion Post #1332 are asked to gather at the funeral home at 6:00PM to pay their respects, and members of the VFW at 6:30 to pay their respects.
Memorial contributions may be made to Sacred Heart School and left at the Mahar and Son Funeral Home.
