John A Thomson

January 24, 1939 — April 26, 2023

The family of John Alexander Thomson is sad to announce his death on April 26, 2023. After his fall in 2022, he was unable to be part of the community that he once loved. Born on January 24, 1939, he was the first son of Alexander John and Berta Ruth (Gardner) Thomson. Later two brothers joined him, Robert and William. With grandparents, John A. and Agnes Thomson; who came to North Bennington in 1911 from Scotland; they lived on the corner of the Clarence Bonyonce estate. Attending the local K-12 school and graduating from North Bennington High School in June of 1957, John was well known for his athletic ability in baseball and basketball. After serving 4 ½ years in the United States Air Force, John accepted a job with the Prudential Life Insurance Company. Later he took a similar job with Metropolitan Insurance. Talking with people seemed to be enjoyment for John and he later sold cars for Walter L. Barber Garage, Art Paulin Garage and Gardner’s Auto. A complete switch of occupations, and one that was very precise and perfect challenged John. Ladders and Paint, he worked for Gordon Kenyon, George Elwell and himself. In 1964, John and Cheryl Kenyon were married at the Baptist Church in North Bennington. They have four sons; John Edward, Scott Francis, Robert Noel and Ross Alexander and his only daughter, Senga Ruth. This became the All Family Red Sox team, even Senga had a glove. The North Bennington Little League Field was the focus. John was the coach, “umped” games and spent many hours on maintenance. As the boys got older it was off to Welling’s Field. In the off season, it was indoor sports. John was asked by then principal, Phil Viereck to open the North Bennington Graded School on Saturday mornings for the local kids. John loved this. When his boys became interested in ice hockey, John flooded the backyard. The boys played wherever there was ice. They would travel to Hoosick Falls and North Adams. The running phase was next, and everyone ran for “The Roses” John was soon driving to Albany and the Tri-City area for road races, sometimes alone and sometimes with kids. Come August, a few trips to Saratoga was a must. The warm evenings also interested John and a few friends to go to the stock care races. Survivors include his children, John, Scott, Robert, Ross and Senga. His grandchildren, Alexandra Mya and Phoebe May Thomson and Mathew Leonard and Miles Francis Smith. A great grandson, Jude Elliot Learner. Two brothers, Robert Thomson and his wife Sally of Bonita Springs, Florida and William Thomson of Bennington. As well as several nieces, nephews and cousins. Services for John will be private and held at the convenience of the family. Guestbook condolences may be made at www.maharandsonfuneralhome.net
