John Anthony Sleeman

John Anthony Sleeman 65, a native resident of Bennington Vermont, passed away unexpectedly at his residence on Main Street on February 16, 2025.
John was born in North Adams, Massachusetts on November 27, 1959, to George and Rose Mary Sleeman. John was predeceased by his brother Alex who died on February 26, 2006.
John is survived by his parents George and Rose Mary Sleeman of Bennington, and two brothers, Paul Sleeman and Dan Sleeman of Bennington, and a sister Mary Leigh Abed of Weston Florida.
John was a graduate of Mount Anthony Union High School class of 1977. As a junior in high school, he was a member of the 1975-76 State Championship Basketball team, and as a senior a member of the 1976 state runner up team.
In 1977 John attended St. Leo University in St Leo Florida. He graduated in 1981 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Physical Education. From 1985 -1988 John worked for The Department of Children Services in Tampa Florida. From 1989 -1994 John worked for the New York State Department of Corrections at Great Meadow Correctional Facility in Comstock New York, Greene Correctional facility in Coxsackie New York and Washington County Correctional Facility in Comstock New York.
In 1995 John was the athletic director and physical education teacher and Head Boys Basketball Coach at Bradenton Academy in Bradenton, Florida, and had a very successful season in his first year as Head Coach.
In 1997 John went to work for The Florida Sheriff’s Department –corrections division until he retired and moved back home in 2002.
Johnny as many called him, had a great sense of humor, and was an avid and committed weightlifter who rarely missed a workout throughout his life. He enjoyed taking road trips and caring for his 1938 Dodge antique truck. He was always generous and willing to help out those in need. He was a New York Yankees and Tampa Bay Buccaneer fan.
His family and all who knew him will miss his bigger than life personality.
At the family’s request, there will be no services, and a private celebration of life will be held in the Spring.
