John Charles Scarey Sr.

John was born on December 15, 1929 to the late John and Agnes (Regan) Scarey in Springfield, Massachusetts. John was a graduate of North Bennington High School before joining the US Navy and served during the Korean conflict. After returning home, John was employed by the William E. Dailey Company for over 50 years. John took an active role in his community and was a member of the Shaftsbury Fire Department, Hail Mountain Fish and Game Club, the American Legion, Boy Scouts of America and Northshaft Little League. John served on the North Bennington School Board.
On August 8, 1959, John married the love of his life, the former Joyce Mattison at Saint John the Baptist Catholic Church in North Bennington. John was tremendously proud of his family and found special joy in spending time with his grandchildren. In addition to his wife of 57 years, Joyce Scarey of North Bennington, John is survived by four children; Karen Ahearn and her husband John of Bennington, Kristine Hunt of North Bennington, John Scarey Jr. (Chuck) and his wife Cara of Shaftsbury and Kathleen Wilkinson of Bennington. John was the proud grandfather of Kate, Bridget and Colleen Ahearn, Emily and David Hunt, Allyson and Adam Scarey, Matthew, Justin, and Ethan Wilkinson, and a great grandson Sebastian John Wilkinson. A sister, Mary Dailey and her husband William Dailey and several nieces, nephews, and cousins.
The funeral will be held from the Mahar and Son Funeral Home on Thursday January 26, 2017 with a prayer at 10:15 a.m. and then from Saint John the Baptist Catholic Church in North Bennington at 11:00 a.m where the Liturgy of Christian Death and Burial will be offered.
The burial with military honors will take place in the family lot at Saint John's Cemetery in North Bennington.
Friends may call at the Mahar and Son Funeral Home on Wednesday January 25, from 5:00 to 7;00 p.m.
