John P. Mcshane

John was born in Concord, NH on September 28, 1931 to Leo McShane and Anne Parkinson McShane. He grew up in Penacook, NH and graduated from Penacook High School (1949). He attended the University of New Hampshire (Durham) class of 1956 with a BA in History and from Northeastern University (Boston) class of 1967 with a M.Ed.
He married his wife of 56 years, Norma Turcotte in Hampton, NH.
John taught in a number of high schools in the northeast; Bristol & Montpelier, VT, Newport, ME, Conway & Exeter, NH before joining the MAUHS staff in 1967 where he was a Guidance Counselor for 28 years.
He was a 35 year member of the Bennington Lions Club, a member of the state and local Vermont Retired Educators Association and a long serving board member of the Bennington County 4-H Foundation where he received an "Outstanding Service Award" in 2019. He served on the 204 Depot Street Board and the Marble Valley Corrections Facility Education Board. He was a baseball scout for the Seattle Pilots and the Milwaukee Brewers.
During his 20 years of coaching he won four championships in football and one in baseball. He was especially proud of his role as the line coach in the 1966 NH-VT Shrine Football game and giving MAUHS its first state championship trophy with the undefeated 1968 baseball team.
A lifelong fan of all of the New England sports teams, the Boston Red Sox, New England Patriots and Notre Dame Fighting Irish were his favorites.
John loved to travel and achieved his goal of visiting all 50 states along with numerous trips to Europe and Mexico.
Survivors include his wife Norma of Bennington, daughter Michele and granddaughter Kyla of Los Cabos, Mexico/Bennington, a brother Peter McShane of Littleton, NH along with a number of nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by an older brother, Thomas McShane.
The funeral will be held from Sacred Heart Saint Francis de Sales Church on Thursday, August 05, 2021 at 2:30 pm where the Liturgy Christian Burial will be offered.
A private burial service will take place at a later date at the Conway Village Cemetery in Conway, NH.
In lieu of flowers, donations in John's memory can be made to; Second Chance Animal Center in honor of his beloved cat, Sato, The Jimmy Fund, or BAYADA Hospice of Vermont through E.P. Mahar & Son Funeral Home, 628 Main Street, Bennington, VT 05201.
