He received his education in Cleveland and was a graduate of John Adams High School class of 1946. He later attended the University of Notre Dame as a V-5 Naval Aviation Cadet from 1946 to 1947. John transitioned to service with the US Air Force, and served his country in the Korean Conflict from 1950 " 1954.
After returning to the US, John married Joyce Carmel in 1955, and settled in North Adams MA. He briefly worked as a DJ in Pittsfield MA before relocating to North Bennington VT. John was employed with the Union Carbide Corporation in Bennington VT as a design and development engineer in special batteries. After retiring from Union Carbide, John worked for a number of years for the North Bennington Post Office, driving a rural route. Tiring of the cold VT winters, John relocated to Venice FL in 1995, where he enjoyed the sunshine for the balance of his lifetime. While in FL, John married Dorothy Schroeder in 2007 and their lives were full and happy in their Venice Isle community.
Raised in the city, John loved the outdoors and wilderness of VT. He took his family on many camping adventures, and explored the eastern Canadian provinces as well. John was a collector of stamps and coins, a fierce sports fan, an avid reader, a successful hunter and dabbled in watercolors and photography. John deeply loved the culture and country of Japan, having spent many a furlough there while enlisted. Throughout his life, spirituality and religion were a central theme. He enthusiastically served in various capacities in several churches over the years. Always friendly, always outgoing and energetic, his spirit was strong and bold.
John was predeceased by his wives Joyce and then Dorothy and his brother Tom. Survivors include his fiancé Patricia Adams of Venice FL, his sister Ellen of Columbus GA, his daughters Joanne Grieco (husband Christopher) of Kittery ME and Susan Laslo of Dover NH, grandchildren Kevin Grieco (wifeToni) of Stoneham MA and Cara Morrison (husband Austin) of Exeter NH and niece Kelly Holt (husband David) in Columbus GA.
At John's request, there will be no calling hours. John was a member of the New Hope Christian Church in Nokomis FL, where services will be scheduled at a later date.
A burial with military honors will take place in the family lot in Grandview Cemetery in North Bennington VT in the near future. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the John G. McCullough Free Library through the office of Mahar & Son Funeral Home, 628 Main Street, Bennington VT 05201.
