John A. (Jack) Stratton, 91, formerly a resident of Bennington, VT, died May 16, 2023 in Rock Hill, South Carolina. He was born in Bennington, VT on May 4, 1932, and was the son of the late Smith Guy Stratton, Sr.. and Anna (Montgomery) Stratton. Jack received his education in local Bennington schools. Jack and his wife the former, Elizabeth (Betty) Moring were married for 71 years. He was a veteran of the United States Army during the Korean Conflict from 1950 – 1953 and was stationed in Fort Belvoir, VA. He also served in the National Guard Reserves for 22 years and retired as a Sergeant 1st Class. He worked for the US Postal Service for 31 years as well as numerous second jobs to support his family. Jack enjoyed traveling the country with Betty for 9 years. He liked to hunt deer and rabbits, lobstering off the coast of Maine and especially enjoyed time at camp in East Wallingford with friends and family. In addition to his wife, Jack is survived by his children: Deborah (Stratton) Chakalis, Richard (Judy), John T. (Tim), Kevin (Lynne), Gregory (Noreen). 18 grandchildren: Sarah, Molly (Stratton) Brockway, Seth Stratton, Meghan (Stratton) Stewart, Michael Montgomery, Laurie Whitman, Shaun Duquette, Kristyn (Stratton) Linn, Karyn Stratton, John, Blake, Richard, and Shane Chakalis. He is also survived by 18 great-grandchildren. He is pre-deceased by his parents; a grandson Jeffrey M. Stratton and 3 brothers, Frank Stratton Sr., Bert Stratton, and Smith Guy Stratton Jr. On the day of Jack’s passing, his 9-year-old great-grandson Jeffrey Stratton wrote a beautiful letter to his great-grandfather.
