John Hayes, a man of many passions and talents, left an indelible mark on those who knew and loved him. Born on April 8, 1948, in Yonkers, New York, to the late John W. Hayes and Beatrice (Gebo) Hayes, John was the eldest of three sons. Among his greatest joys was his deep love for music, with a special fondness for Hank Williams Jr. John was thrilled to fulfill his dream of seeing Hank Williams Jr. perform live in concert alongside Kid Rock in 2000. His eclectic taste in music spanned genres, from Lynyrd Skynyrd and the Beastie Boys to Jelly Roll, showcasing his appreciation for a wide array of sounds and styles.

In 1977, John moved his family to Vermont in search of a better life. With a deep passion for cooking, he fulfilled his dream by opening and operating two beloved restaurants: Intown and later Giovanni's, an Italian eatery on Main Street in Bennington. John took immense pride in the success of his establishments, where he brought the joy of Italian cuisine to the community.

John's journey began in Yonkers, where he attended local schools and cultivated the values and skills that would guide him through life. Early in his career, he worked with the Local out of New York City, earning a reputation for his dedication and work ethic.

In his later years, John found joy in life's simple pleasures, including music, plants, crafting, and woodworking. Among his most cherished activities was sharing the culinary arts with his "Angels," teaching them to cook and creating treasured memories in the kitchen.

John held his father, Jay, in the highest regard, taking immense pride in Jay's life membership with the VFW. Inspired by his father's legacy, John actively participated in numerous VFW events and initiatives. He also immersed himself in the local car enthusiast community, serving as a coordinator for the DARE Car Show at Hemmings Motor News. His lifelong love for fast and classic cars was a defining part of his identity.

John is survived by his life partner, Linda Davis; his daughter Jacquelyn T. Myers and her husband John of Shaftsbury; his daughter Jessica T. Ward and her husband Jeff of Saratoga; and his son Joseph T. Hayes and his wife Angela of Bennington. A brother Alan Hayes of Yonkers. He leaves behind his grandchildren: Jacob Barney (Megan) of Pownal, Justin Siskavich (Samantha) of Saratoga, Corbyn Hayes, Lauren Cinelli (Tyler) of Bennington, Desiree Myers (Alex) of Troy, NY, Carlee Hayes of Bennington, Ashley Hayes of Bennington, and Blake Hayes of Bennington. John was also blessed with seven great-grandchildren. He also leaves behind his beloved dog Hogan.

He was predeceased by his parents, John (Jay) W. Hayes and Beatrice Hayes, and his brother Richard Hayes.

A devoted team of caregivers, lovingly referred to as "John's Angels," played an integral role in John's later years. Handpicked by his daughter, these compassionate individuals - Heidi Young of Shaftsbury, Katina Hamilton of Bennington, Emma Zeininger of Pittsfield, MA, Samantha Hamilton of Bennington, and Chris Davis of Bennington provided John with unparalleled care, filling his final months with joy, comfort, and love.

"John's Angels" went above and beyond, helping John relive cherished memories and embrace new experiences. From dinners at his favorite eateries to movie nights in heated reclining seats, their thoughtful gestures brought immeasurable happiness. They shared special moments like viewing eclipses, watching fireworks, and taking scenic drives. John would often say with pride, "My daughter handpicked the best team ever."

These extraordinary caregivers remained by John's side until his final breath, ensuring that his journey was filled with love, laughter, and the best of life's offerings. Their unwavering dedication was a testament to the love and respect John inspired in those who knew him.

A celebration of life for John will be held on Sunday, January 26, 2025 from 12:00-3:00pm at the VFW in Bennington.
