John Herbert "Jack" Evans (Evans)

Military service started in the 695th F.A., 50th Armored Division in Morristown, N.J. National Guard. The Korean Conflict emerged, and the next three years was spent in the Far East. On emerging from the service, the Federal Government offered a job that was hard to refuse, working for the Department of Defense, National Security Agency in Washington, D.C., as a linguist. Aula Joann Nelson and I were married September 24, 1955 in the Brookside Community Church, Brookside, NJ., After a wonderful honeymoon we returned to Washington, D.C., me with a re-occurring bout of malaria. The next assignment was to be in China and my wife was expecting our first child. She would not be able to travel with me, so I left the Agency ending my formal government employment. I was fluent in two languages, neither of which were English!
The ensuing year's employment was in photography, which lead to living in Vermont working as photographer at Polygraphic in North Bennington, followed with a four-year period as photographer and art director of Corning Glass Works Graphic Media in northern New Jersey. The hills of Vermont called and back to Vermont and Garrison in North Bennington, still in photography, and eventually retirement after a few more jobs, ending with UST in Bennington. The place our children will remember as "Home" will be our three story Victorian called "The Black Lantern", in Shaftsbury, VT. There was a resident ghost! Along came the "Oil Embargo" and the price of heating became a burden. Our final home would be in Sunderland, Vermont. Our 61st wedding anniversary was celebrated September 24, 2016. We had a wonderful marriage.
My wife predeceased me on Sept. 23, 2017. I passed away quietly on October 29, 2017, at the Vermont Veterans Home, where I enjoyed excellent care for the last 2 years of my life. Those who remain include my brother, Robert Evans Jr [Carol], my children Aula DeWitt, Gail Albright [Jim] and Marc Evans [Connie] as well as six grandchildren and six great grandchildren.
I participated in numerous organizations including, Military Affiliate Radio systems [MARS], Boy Scouts of America, Asst. District Commissioner, Washington DC and Scout Master Troop 331 [Shaftsbury]; Catamount Radio Club, Rattlesnakes, GAIU [past president], and the National Weather Service Co-Op. It was important to me to donate blood every opportunity possible and I gave a life time amount of sixty gallons.
A memorial service and life celebration will be held at the Federated Church of East Arlington Vermont on Saturday, November 11, beginning at 11 am. Refreshments at the church will follow with interment in the Arlington, Vermont, Evergreen Cemetery, at the convenience of the family. Donations should be made in my name to the Boy Scouts of America.
