John H. Cook, 86, a resident of West Street, Bennington, died Thursday, February 14, 2019 at the Southwestern Vermont Medical Center following a brief illness.
Born in Ludlow, VT August 27, 1932, he was the son of the late Harold and Susan (Fuller) Cook. He received his education in the Ludlow schools.
John married the former Lucille Bostwick at the North Bennington Baptist Church on September 20, 1952. Lucille died on September 25, 2015.
A veteran of the Korean War, John served in the U.S. Army as a military police officer. Following his honorable discharge, he worked as a truck driver his entire life. He was employed by Merrill Transport, Holmes Trucking, and St. Johnsbury Trucking until the time of his retirement. During his retirement, he worked for Synergy Gas.
John was a member of the VFW Post 1332, American Legion Post 13, Bennington Elks Lodge 567, and Bennington Eagles Aerie 1861. He was an active member of the North Bennington Baptist Church.
John enjoyed playing golf and was a regular member of the cribbage group at the VFW, where he also volunteered on numerous occasions.
John is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Cashelle and Mark Lukas of Shaftsbury, VT; a sister, Margaret Brace of Bennington, VT; and a niece, Bonnie Sauer, and great-niece, Holly Hastings. John was predeceased by his sister, Nellie Yager.
Memorial services celebrating the life of John H. Cook will be held at the VFW Post 1332 in Bennington on Friday, March 1, 2019, 2:00 " 5:00 p.m.
A graveside service with military honors will be held at the family lot at the Grandview Cemetery in North Bennington, VT. The time of this service will be announced in the spring.
