John E. Brochu (Brochu)

John Brochu, 82, a longtime resident of Gage Street in Bennington, VT died unexpectedly Saturday December 1, 2018 at his residence.

He was born on the family farm in Hardwick, VT March 24, 1936. The thirteenth of fourteen children of Davila and Elodie (Patoine) Brochu. John received his education in Hardwick.

From 1955 to 1957, John served in the 2nd Armored Division, 78th Armored Field Artillery of the United States Army alongside his younger brother Jacques.

In 1960 he moved to Bennington with Rossi Construction to help build Route 7 in Pownal, VT.

In 1961 John married the former Mary Racicot at Sacred Heart Church in Bennington.

In earlier years "Big John", as he was known to his family, was employed by the town of Bennington as Superintendent of the Bennington Landfill until its closing. He then went to work for the highway department where he maintained the winter sidewalks with precision. He also owned and operated his own lawn mowing business for which he always received great appreciation.

He was a communicant of Sacred Heart Church. John was a proud 4th Degree member of the Knights of Columbus Council 307 and was awarded for his work for Right to Life. His family was his pride and joy and always his first priority.

Survivors include his wife of 57 years, Mary Brochu of Bennington, his children, Mary "Babette" Cannavan (Tim) of Bennington, John Paul Brochu (Sherry) of Shaftsbury, Joseph Brochu (Nancy) of Burlington, Philip Brochu (Kathy) of Bennington, Thérèse Rainville (Jim) of Burlington, Caroline Hall (Doug) of Fairfield, VT and Anne Marie Thresher (Mark) of Washington State. He was Pépère to 14 grandchildren, BJ and Victor Cannavan, Kaitlyn and Brittany Brochu, Levi, Helena, Blaise and Giselle Rainville, Alaina, Gabrielle, Natalie and Joseph Hall and Paul and Madeline Thresher. He also has two brothers and two sisters that survive
The funeral will be held from the Mahar and Son Funeral Home on Friday December 7, at 10:30 a.m. with a prayer and then from Sacred Heart Saint Francis de Sales Church at 11:00 am where the Liturgy of Christian Death and Burial will be offered.

The burial will follow in the family lot at White Chapel Cemetery.

Friends may call at the Mahar and Son Funeral Home on Thursday December 6, from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. The rosary will be offered by the Knights of Columbus at 6:30 p.m.
