John J. Billow Jr., 89, a resident of Twitchell Hill Road in Shaftsbury, died Friday, October 7, 2016 at Bennington Health and Rehabilitation following a brief illness.
Born in Granville, NY June 20, 1927, he was the son of the late John J. Billow Sr. and Mary (Labas) Billow. John was a 1944 graduate of Granville High School.
John entered the U.S. Navy in 1945 just prior to end of World War II. Following his discharge John enrolled at Bryant University in Providence, R.I, where he received his Bachelor's Degree in Accounting and Finance in 1949. While at Bryant John was a member of the YMCA swim team and won a silver medal for his performance in the Tri-State competition. He later became a life guard, life saver and an aquatic leader examiner.
John first went to work at Bigelow Sanford Carpets in Amsterdam, NY in the Cost Engineering Department. On June 15, 1952 he married Henrietta Zovistoski at All Saints Church in Granville.
In 1955 John accepted a position as Industrial Engineer at BenMont Paper Company in Bennington. In 1965 John left BenMont for a position at the Beechnut Lifesavers Company in Canajoharie, NY and later transferred to Cushman Furniture Company in North Bennington. Following his years at Cushman's he went to work at Stanley Tools in Shaftsbury where he worked for 17 years until his retirement in 1989.
A licensed realtor, John established Billow Real Estate in Shaftsbury which he and his wife Henri operated for twenty years.
John was a member of St, John the Baptist Catholic Church in North Bennington, Bennington Elks Lodge and American Legion Post 13.
Survivors include his wife, Henrietta Billow of Shaftsbury; two children, Joanne Billow and John E. (Denise) Billow, all of Pittsfield, MA; grandchildren Basil and Nadine Billow; a sister, Mary Ann Woodell of Albany, NY; a brother, Alex Debbie) Billow of Massena, NY and several nieces, nephews and cousins. John was predeceased by three brothers, Michael, Joseph and William Billow.
The funeral will be held from the Mahar & Son Funeral Home in Bennington on Wednesday, October 12, 2016 at 10:15 a.m. with a prayer and from St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in North Bennington at 11:00 a.m. where the Liturgy of Christian Death and Burial will be offered.
Friends may call at the Mahar & Son Funeral Home Tuesday from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. when the family will be in attendance.
Private committal services will take place in the family lot at St. Johns Cemetery in North Bennington at the convenience of the family.
