John Percy Andrews II, 31, a resident of Cedar Circle, Shaftsbury, passed peacefully at his home on Sunday, August 1, 2021 surrounded by his loving family.
Born in Bennington on December 5, 1989, he was the son of Allen and Rebecca (Begin) Andrews. John received his early education in the Pownal schools and graduated from Mt. Anthony Union High School in 2008 with high honors and went to Seton Hill University in Greensburg, PA from 2008-2010. John then transferred to Southern Vermont College and graduated as Valedictorian of his class with a 4.0 GPA.
John started his nursing career at Southwestern Vermont Medical Center in the Emergency Department. He later moved to Burlington and worked at the University of Vermont Medical Center Emergency Department as a charge nurse. In 2017 John moved back home to be with family and continued working at SVMC as charge nurse. John thrived working in critical care and saving lives and enjoyed educating others and sharing his knowledge.
John married Kaitlyn Gwozdz on June 27, 2020 in Shaftsbury.
When not working, John spent his hours in his garden, fly fishing, and listening to the Doors, Steven Ray Vaughn, and blue grass music. Growing up John played in the Pownal Little League, swam for the Bennington Marauders swim team, and played soccer. In high school John played lacrosse and was very successful with wrestling as he was a three time State Champion and two time All American wrestler.
Although John loved sports, his love for nursing, education, and serving others in the community was endless. John also loved spending time with his step-son Wesley. Together, John and Wesley enjoyed playing outside and dancing to AC/DC.
John's brother Ethan, passed away last year. In John and Ethan's honor, John requested to set up the "Andrews Brothers Foundation" which will be a scholarship for Mount Anthony students who want to go into a trade program or nursing program.
Survivors include his wife, Kaitlyn Andrews and a step-son, Wesley Burke of Shaftsbury; his parents, Allen and Rebecca (Begin) Andrews of Shaftsbury; a sister, Abby Andrews of North Bennington; John's right-hand man, his cousin Quinn Andrews, his sister-in-law, Meagan Andrews and two nieces, Layla and Willow of Bennington; his father-in-law and spouse, Jason and Annick Gwozdz of Shaftsbury; his maternal grandmother, Sheila Harwood and her husband Vincent of Bennington; his maternal grandfather, Dennis Begin of Hoosick Falls and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
John was predeceased by his brother, Ethan Andrews who died July 20, 2020, a sister, Kathleen Randolph and his mother-in-law, Michelle C. Gwozdz.
The funeral will be held from the Mahar & Son Funeral Home on Saturday, August 7, 2021 at 12:45 p.m. with a prayer and from St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in North Bennington at 1:30 p.m. where the Liturgy of Christian Burial will be offered.
Friends may call at the funeral home Saturday from 11:00 a.m. until the time of the service.
Burial will take place in the family lot in Center Shaftsbury Cemetery.
