BENNINGTON
Jean N. Rice, 86, widow of C. Edward Rice, a resident of East Road, Bennington, died Thursday, April 6, 2017 at Southwestern Vermont Medical Center.
Born in Winthrop, MA on January 9, 1931, she was the daughter of the late Peter James and Kathleen Vitch (Hill) Nelson. Jean received her early education in Shaftsbury and was a 1949 graduate of North Bennington High School.
Jean and Ed were married on August 20, 1949 at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in North Bennington. Jean was predeceased by her husband Ed and brother-in-law, Albert J. Macauley.
Jean was employed for 30 years at the former Union Carbide plant in Bennington until her retirement in 1990. Following retirement, she worked in the cafeteria at the Shaftsbury Elementary School for several years.
Jean was a member of Sacred Heart St. Francis de Sales Church in Bennington and was also a member of the American Legion Auxiliary and the Bennington Club. She enjoyed knitting, crafts, crossword puzzles, babysitting, traveling and enjoyed watching her grandchildren's sporting events.
Survivors include eight children and their spouses, Stephan A. (Debi) Rice of The Villages, FL, Shawn Rice of Grantville, PA, Paul (Susan) Rice of Bennington, Jeffrey Rice of Moretown, VT, Brian (Debbie) Rice of Bennington, Daniel (Lynne) Rice of Bennington, Christine (Larry) Herrington of North Hero, VT and Beth-Anne (Dennis) Kissel of Manchester, NH; thirteen grandchildren and eleven great-grandchildren; a sister, Jill (Lew) Levin of Shaftsbury; a sister-in-law, Mary Macauley of Bennington; a cousin, Charles "Jay" Anderson of Florida; and several nieces, nephews and cousins. The family would like to give a special thanks for their loving care to Jillian Davis, Corrine Levin, Susan Walsh and the entire staff at Bennington Health & Rehabilitation.
Memorial services celebrating the life of Jean Rice will be held from St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in North Bennington on Thursday, April 13, 2017 at 11:00
where the Liturgy of the Word will be offered.
At Jean's request there will be no visiting hours.
Burial will take place in the family lot in St. Johns Cemetery in North Bennington.
