James A. "Joe" Towslee, 90, a resident of Barber Pond Road, Pownal, died peacefully on Friday, July 30, 2021 at the Vermont Veterans Home surrounded by his family.
Born in Pownal on May 4, 1931, Joe was the son of the late Ned and Dorothy (Fancy) Towslee. Joe received his education in the Pownal schools and was a 1949 graduate of Bennington High School. Following high school Joe enlisted in the U.S. Air Force where he served during the Korean War.
Joe then attended and graduated from the New England School of Art in Boston where he studied drafting and painting
After returning to Bennington Joe went to work at Union Carbide Corporation/ Eveready until his retirement in 1993.
Joe married Cynthia Millis of North Adams, MA on April 20, 1968 at Saint John's Episcopal Church. Joe and Cindy celebrated their 53rd wedding anniversary this past April.
An active outdoorsman, Joe especially enjoyed his camp in Pownal and owned one of the first snowmobiles in the area. Joe was an avid fan of horse racing, the Boston Red Sox, Boston Celtics, painting, drawing, gathering family history/genealogy, photography and especially spending time with his grandchildren.
Survivors include his wife, Cynthia Towslee of Pownal; a daughter and son in-law, Kristen and Michael Hayes of Charlotte; a son, Jonathan Towslee of Boston, MA; three grandchildren, Katey of San Francisco, CA, Lindsea and Michael of Charlotte; a brother, Walter E. "Sam" Towslee of University Park, FL and Stowe, VT and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
The funeral will be held at the Park McCullogh House, 1 Park Street, North Bennington, VT on Monday, August 9, 2021 at 12:00 PM Friends may call at the Park McCullough Monday from 11 AM until the time of the service.
Burial will take place in the family lot in Park Lawn Cemetery at 2:30 PM.
