NORTH BENNINGTON- James "Jim" Derby, 70, a resident of North Bennington, Vermont, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, February 22nd, 2022, following a courageous battle with cancer.

Born April 12th, 1951, in Port Chester New York, Jim was the son of the late Charles and Jane Derby. While growing up in Port Chester, becoming an Eagle Scout was one of his proudest achievements, and when Jim picked up a trumpet at the age of 9, he started playing music and he never stopped. He received his Bachelors degree in music education from Ball State University, followed by his Masters degree at the University of Bridgeport.

As a music educator, Jim dedicated over 40 years to teaching young musicians how to play instruments and appreciate music. He spent nearly 25 of those years teaching the students at Mount Anthony Union Middle School.

After meeting at Valley Forge Military Academy, Jim married his life-long sweetheart, Yvonne in 1980, in Armagh, Northern Ireland. After following their careers through multiple states they settled in North Bennington, VT with a fixer upper that became their pride and joy. In this home they raised their two children Trevor and Colin.

Music was not just a career for Jim, it was his life. He played tuba and other instruments in many local groups and bands. Besides those activities, he also loved traveling, history, and woodworking. Jim was a lifelong jokester who loved puns. He devoted his life to his family and sharing his love of music with those around him.

Survivors of Jim include his wife of over 40 years Yvonne Derby, and their sons Trevor (Andrea) and Colin (Lauren) and his sister, Ellen Shaver (Mike). He has numerous nieces, nephews, and additional family members in Ireland.
