Jacqueline D. "Jacquie" Carson (Carson)

She was born in Saratoga, New York November 11, 1960. She was the daughter of the late Donald Carson and Beverly (Bruno) Squires who survives. Jacquie received her education in Greenwich, New York where she graduated from Greenwich High School. She received her bachelor's degree from Franklin Pierce College and her Master's from (SUNY) Sage College in Albany, NY.
For more than 20 years, Jacquie was CEO of Sanborn Place Health and Homecare, an innovative senior housing residence in Reading, MA. She was a fierce advocate for seniors having access to supportive services that allowed them to live independently. She was committed to seniors enjoying rich and fulfilled lives even after facing age-related health challenges. She battled through regulatory barriers to ensure that Sanborn residents could remain in their homes even after medical conditions required more expensive and restrictive settings. Jacquie was instrumental in Sanborn launching its own home care company, and adult day services company; the three entities worked together to ensure that Sanborn residents had access to the medical care required to eliminate the need to move to a nursing home or hospice near the end of their lives.
Jacquie's work at Sanborn Place was featured in the bestselling book Being Mortal, by Dr. Atul Gawande, with whom she shared a friendship. As part of his research for his book on end of life medical choices, Gawande visited Sanborn Place and interviewed residents and staff. He found that Sanborn's approach, which Jacquie and embodied, ensured that residents could age safely in their homes, with necessary services delivered by caring professionals. This approach is now being adopted by senior housing organizations around the country.
Jacquie was active with LeadingAge, a national advocacy organization for non- profit senior living communities. She was a board member of LeadingAge, Massachusetts, and served on various committees at the national level. She was a regular participant at the organization's annual conferences, where she engaged in passionate debates on the future of affordable senior living communities and the importance of breaking down regulatory barriers. She will be missed by her colleagues in the Boston area and around the country.
Jacquie was passionately committed to elders spending their final months and days in their homes, surrounded by friends and loved ones. She often used the knowledge of the health system to help local friends navigate this system and find the best setting possible for their aging parents and loved ones.
Prior to working at Sanborn, Jacquie was employed for 11 years at United Counseling Service in Bennington. Jacquie along with her husband Brian own and operate J.C.'s Tavern in Bennington.
Jacquie was well known for volunteering her time and efforts. She was instrumental in helping raise money for those in need throughout Bennington County. She enjoyed playing golf, skiing, spending time with her nephews and traveling.
Survivors include her husband Brian Johansen of Bennington. Her mother, Beverly Squires of Greenwich, New York. A brother Jerry Squires and his wife Karen of Greenwich, NY, a sister Tonya Grimes and her husband Michael of Greenwich, her father in law and mother in law, Donald and Roberta Johansen of Medford, MA, a brother in law and sister in law, Robert and Pina Johansen of Haverhill, MA along with several nieces, nephews and cousins.
There will be no calling hours.The funeral mass will be celebrated at Sacred Heart Saint Francis de Sales Church in Bennington on Thursday January 17, 2019 at 11:00 a.m. A reception will follow the Mass at JC's Tavern in Bennington.
