Irene S. Herrick (Sausville)

Irene S. Herrick, widow of Francis L. Herrick, M.D., a resident of Fairview Street in Bennington, and more recently of Fillmore Pond, died June 8, 2016.
She was born on February 20, 1914 to Charles and Delia (Boutin) Sausville. Her early education was at Sacred Heart School, later Bennington High School. After her graduation, she attended nursing school at St. Luke's in Pittsfield: she graduated becoming a Registered Nurse. Her first employment was at Putnam Memorial Hospital, now Southwestern Vermont Medical Center.; there she worked primarily in the operating room as both a circulating and scrub nurse. Thereafter, she continued her education, this time at the Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston where she completed her education as a nurse anesthetist, becoming a Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist (CRNA). She returned to Bennington where she continued her work as a nurse, this time as an anesthetist. This continued until 1966 when she married Dr. Herrick: shortly thereafter they both retired. (He predeceased her in 1978).
Throughout her life, being a proficient seamstress, she sewed outfits for her nieces. She enjoyed her family, including time at the family camp. Subsequent to her retirement, she enjoyed taking care of her home and gardening. Both she and her husband enjoyed travels throughout the United States, trips that they both had looked forward to. Irene remained independent in her home until age 98, when a fall required surgery and a move to an assisted care setting.
Survivors include her step-daughter, Ann Herrick of Bennington; a sister, Margaret "Midge" Munns of North Brookfield, MA; a brother, Robert Sausville of Bennington; and many nieces and nephews. Irene was predeceased by four brothers, and sisters: Clarence, Charles, Leona, and Rita Sausville Kearns.
Private services will take place at the convenience of the family. Burial will take place at the Herrick family lot in Mettowee Cemetery in Pawlet, VT.
