Irene W. Baker, 93, born July 12, 1928 died peacefully at her home in Bennington, Vermont on Sunday, February 13, 2022.
Irene was born in Middle Village, New York, and worked briefly as a secretary on Wall Street. She married Hugh G. Baker in 1953, and they moved to Bayville, Long Island, NY, where they raised their five children.
Irene was an active member of the Village Church of Bayville, where she organized many events to benefit the church, including the Strawberry and Ice Cream festival, Christmas rummage sales and numerous holiday dinners. Irene and Hugh were also members of the Elks Club.
In 1986 Irene and Hugh moved to Bennington, Vermont and opened a bed-and-breakfast called "Bakers at Bennington". She thoroughly enjoyed many years of hosting guests from around the world. In her later years Irene worked as a volunteer "Grey Lady" at Southwestern Vermont Medical Center in Bennington. She was awarded the Spirit of Magnet Award for her outstanding kindness to all patients and staff. Irene was a great lover of animals, having had numerous dogs, cats, goats, chickens, and guinea hens throughout her life, and fostered puppies for Second Chance Animal Center. Irene enjoyed her weekly visits to Bennington Project Independence (BPI). Her hugs will be missed throughout the community.
Irene is predeceased by her husband, Hugh G Baker, her sister, Margaret Flower, and brothers, William Witte and Charlie Witte.
Irene is survived, and will be greatly missed by her children; Christine Baker and Patrick Stines, Lisette Baker, Theodore Baker, Lorraine Baker and Jennifer Baker, her grandchildren; Monique Stines, Phillip (PJ) and Hayley Piscitello, Jasmin Stines and Tom Castagna, Cole Muttee, Lindsey and Bill LaCross, Brianna Baker-Stines, Joot Wright, Hayden Muttee, and Lydia Wright and great grandchildren; Morgan Stines-Eggers, Julian Piscitello, Colton LaCross, and Phoebe Piscitello.
Friends may call at the Mahar and Son Funeral Home on Friday, February 18, from 11:00 am - 1:00 pm.
The funeral will be held from the Mahar and Son Funeral Home on Friday February 18 at 1pm. The burial will take place immediately following the service in the family lot at Park Lawn Cemetery.
