Donald H. Howard, 82, of Congress St. in Bennington, VT, passed away on December 8, 2024, at the Vermont Veterans Home (VVH), where he had resided since 2022. Donald was born in Bennington on May 9, 1942, to Henry and Marie (Boutin) Howard. He graduated from Bennington Catholic High School and was a proud member of the United States Army, serving in the Vietnam War.
A lifelong resident of Bennington, Donald worked as a caretaker at Park Lawn Cemetery for 37 years, a role in which he took great pride. He was well-known in the community for his kind heart and his love of animals, particularly dogs and cats—“whom he often preferred over people”. Donald was a familiar face at the SVMC cafeteria, where he made many lasting friendships.
Donald was predeceased by his companion of 45 years, Helen Hogan, his parents Henry and Marie (Boutin) Howard, a sister Jeanne Cahalan, a nephew Patrick Cahalan and a life long friend, Patricia Joly. He will be greatly missed by his close friend Raymond Joly, as well as Missy Crawford and family, with whom he spent his last several years enjoying holidays and gatherings. In October 2024, he enjoyed a final trip to Maine, where he made wonderful memories with them. Earlier in his life, Donald treasured his time spent at his camp in Woodford, VT, where he created some of his happiest times.
Donald’s warmth, generosity, and quiet strength left an indelible mark on all who knew him. He will be greatly missed by all.
On Donald's behalf, Missy Crawford would like to extend her gratitude to the staff of the Vermont Veterans Home for their care and support.
Per Donald's wishes, there will be no calling hours and Donald will be laid to rest at a later date.
