Herbert L. Armstrong
1943-2017
POWNAL- Herbert (Herb) L. Armstrong, 73, passed away on January 30, 2017 while in Port Charlotte, Florida.
Born in Bennington on December 7, 1943 to the late Raymond and Bettie (Hilliard) Armstrong, Herb received his education in the Pownal and Bennington schools.
Herb was married to his beloved wife Judith (Shaw) on February 1, 1964 at the Church of the Immaculate Conception in Hoosick Falls, NY.
Herb worked in his younger years at Winslow's Plumbing and Heating, Bijur, and Oak Mitsui. He became a real estate agent in 1979, later opening Armstrong Realty. In 1980, he and his wife opened This N That Gift Shop in Pownal. Herb served as a Vermont state representative for one term, 1983-1984.
Herb enjoyed motor sports, winning the Rupp Snowmobile National Rider of the year award in 1974. He enjoyed his tractor, snowmobiles, motorcycles, deer hunting, golf, and most of all, time spent with his family. He was a jack of all trades and built 3 homes and remodeled many more.
Herb suffered a debilitating stroke in 2001. He persevered after losing the use of his right side along with his speech with tremendous courage and a smile on his face. He was an example of determination and grace, and was an inspiration to all who knew and loved him. He will be deeply missed.
Survivors include his wife, Judith (Shaw) Armstrong of Pownal, VT and Port Charlotte, FL; his daughter and son-in-law, Jacqueline and Michael Gilpin of Pownal, VT; son and daughter-in-law, Michael and Crystal Armstrong of Fort Myers, FL; daughter and son-in-law, Jennifer and Richard Smith of Pownal, VT; three grandchildren, Bradley Armstrong, Lillian Armstrong and Leah Smith; one brother, Keith Armstrong of Bennington; several brothers-in-laws and sisters-in-laws, Donna Armstrong of South Carolina, Betsy Murphy of Brunswick, NY, Teresa and George Driscoll of Hoosick Falls, NY, and Ann and Walt Shaw of Grafton, NY. He is predeceased by his parents, Raymond and Bettie Armstrong, brother Donald Armstrong, brother-in-law Richard Murphy, and sister-in-law Barbara Armstrong.
The funeral will be held from the Mahar & Son Funeral Home on Monday, February 6, 2017 at 10:30 a.m. with a prayer and from Scared Heart St. Francis de Sales Church at 11:00 a.m. where the Liturgy of Christian Death and Burial will be offered.
Friends may call at the funeral home Sunday from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m.
Burial will take place in Oak Hill Cemetery, Pownal, in the spring.
