Henry M. Strohmaier

Henry M. Strohmaier, age 76, a lifelong resident of Pownal died on November 5, 2019, at home in Pownal following a long illness. He was born at the family farm in Pownal on March 25, 1943, and was the son of the late William and Blanche (Dunican) Strohmaier. He received his education in local schools. Henry has been a farmer for his entire life, started milking cows as a teenager. When he took over running the family farm, he started selling milk to Fairdale Farms. He married the former Cecily Reich Carson in 1984. Mrs. Strohmaier survives. Henry was extremely community oriented. He was a member of the selectboard for several terms, and was a Founding Charter Member of the East Pownal Fire Department. He is a member of the Masonic Lodge, and the Farmers Services in Vermont. Henry was instrumental in working with the Bicentennial Committee. He was an active member of the Future Farmers of America and the High Hopes 4H Club. Henry also ran a sugarhouse, and saw mill. Along with other family members, he built the barns and the family hunting camp. He also operated Peacefully Valley Feed Store in Pownal.

Besides his wife, he is survived by his children: Ellen Strohmaier of Pownal, Joseph Strohmaier of Pownal, Emma Strohmaier (David Senecal) of Stamford, VT, his step-daughter, Brooke Carson of Shaftsbury, VT and step-son, Kit Carson (Rebecca) of Clarksburg, MA. He leaves several grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces and nephews. He is survived by one brother and sister-in-law Wilhelm and Genevieve Strohmaier of Pownal, and many extended family and friends. He is predeceased by one son Hank Strohmaier, his former wife, Loraine Strohmaier, his sister Emma "Bunny" Harwood, and his uncle and mentor, Adolph "Otto" Strohmaier.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, November 9, 2019 at the Mahar and Son Funeral Home, 628 Main St., Bennington at 1:00PM. Friends may call at the funeral home from 11:00AM until the time of the service. Memorial contributions may be made to the Leahy Clinic in Burlington, MA, through the Mahar and Son Funeral Home.
