Helen L. Bisson (Labarge)

September 18, 1929 — April 30, 2021

Helen (LaBarge) Bisson, 91, a resident of Pownal, VT, formerly of Bennington, VT, fell asleep in death at her home Friday, April 30, 2021, due to COVID complications.
Helen, the second of nine children, was born at home in Bennington, VT on September 18, 1929. She was the first daughter of the late Robert N. and Philomene (Chenaille) LaBarge. She had two brothers, one older than she, and six sisters.
In addition to her parents, Helen was predeceased by five siblings, Robert E. LaBarge, Charmaine DeCoigne, Irene (Giroux) Jones, Edward LaBarge, and Mary Rose Bratcher. Helen is survived by three sisters, Marcelline Piekos, Pauline Frost, and Philomene Pratt.
Helen was 17 when she married Raymond J. Bisson (19) of North Pownal, VT on June 21, 1947 at Our Lady of Lourdes Church in North Pownal, VT. Raymond said the first time he saw Helen, when she walked through the door of Powell's General Store in North Pownal, he knew that she was the girl he was going to marry, and he did. They were happily married 49 years when cancer took Raymond from her on November 13, 1996. Helen never remarried. Together Helen and Raymond had four daughters, Joy, Dayle, Lana, and Ren.
While Helen worked in local mills as a young woman and provided childcare for many children over the years, her main interests were her large family and many friends. She spent the majority of her life as a homemaker where she consistently welcomed her loved ones around her table for dinner at five o'clock sharp. Whether it was for a rousing game of Yahtzee, Farkle, or Scrabble, or for card games like Cribbage, Canasta, and Queens, or simply for an impromptu visit, the tea kettle was turned on, the centerpiece was removed from the table, and love was served up. Helen opened her spotless home, her well-stocked pantry, and her generous heart to everyone she loved. Regardless of the time of day or reason for your visit, Helen would greet you with open arms, a genuine smile, and the words, "Well hello, my darling! I'm so happy you came to see me!" Her dedication and devotion to the people she held dear was boundless. She will be missed beyond measure.
Helen is survived by her four daughters, Joy Bahan (Philip), Dayle McCarty (William), Lana Reed (Gary), and Ren Bisson (Amy Stewart), by her grandchildren, Bryce Wade (Rebecca) and Wesley Wade (Meghan), Brandon Coulter (Valerie), Travis McCarty (Kristan) and Taylor Page (Phillip), Matthew Reed (Cherise) and Stafford Reed Forrest (Stephen), and LaShea Stewart and Chloe Howard, and by her great grandchildren, Evan and Henry Wade, Kiersten, Avery, Kenlee, and Declan Wade, Juliana Coulter, Braeden, Maevry, and Sawyer McCarty, Hannah and Noah Page, Mya, Elijah, and Isaac Reed, and Alivia and Madyn Reed and Maisley Forrest, as well as several nieces and nephews.
Due to Helen's often-expressed wishes, there will be no calling hours or church services. Helen will be laid to rest next to her beloved Raymond at Park Lawn Cemetery at a graveside service on Wednesday, May 5, 2021, at one o'clock in the afternoon to which all who loved her and her family are invited. For the safety of everyone, the family lovingly requests that everyone wear a mask and practice social distancing. Miles Bowen, a dear family friend, will offer words of remembrance graveside.
Should you wish to make a donation in Helen's memory, please do so to either Second Chance Animal Center, 1779 Vermont Route 7A, Arlington, VT 05250 or to VNA and Hospice of the Southwest Region, 7 Albert Cree Drive, Rutland, VT 05701.
