Obituary for Harold R. Sargent Jr.
12/4/20
It is with great sadness that we share the passing of our Father, Grandfather, Great-Grandfather, Brother, Uncle, and Friend -- Harold R. Sargent Jr. age 95.
Harold took great pleasure in his upbringing having been raised in Stowe, Vermont. He was the son of a successful dairy farmer that specialized in "Milk for Infants" during the 1930s and 1940s. In 1944 at the age of 18, he enlisted in WWII, trained at Fort Hood in Texas, and was then sent to the European Front where he saw active combat duty. In 1945 he was shot by enemy aircraft sustaining serious injury and awarded the Purple Heart. While hospitalized in England he was visited by Princess Elizabeth who gifted to him a pair of kid skin gloves for his birthday. During his service he received in total two purple hearts and other honors, including awards for serving in two full-scale military campaigns.
Proud of his life and heritage, he enjoyed sharing stories of the past with such detail one could almost imagine being there. He loved his family, the Masons (achieving 32nd Degree honors), his friends, and community. He loved the woods and spent many hours as a child playing amongst the trees. Once grown he became an avid outdoorsman.
Harold was an entrepreneur in many ways. He had ingenuity and was not afraid to take on challenges in business. He owned and operated several companies through the years, his last professional endeavor was the co-development of a Business Support Bureau for GE Plastics and Silicones. A progressive thinker, he was always open to new adventures, places, ideas, and roads unknown. A Systems Analyst by trade he attended the Burlington Business College in Burlington, Vermont, graduating with an Economic and Business Administration degree following the war.
Harold spent his last moments at his home in Bennington, VT., surrounded by family. He leaves his daughter Carolyn A. Sargent of Bennington, VT., son Harold R. Sargent III and wife Judith (Lay) of Irving, TX., daughter Mary E. Sargent, Shaftsbury, VT., son Michael E. Sargent and wife Mardi (Roberts) also of Shaftsbury, VT., Grandchildren: Walter and Beth Sargent of Joshua, TX, Peter Sargent of Irving, TX., Kalen Sargent of Cambridge, Ma., Allison (Alli) Sargent of Manchester, VT., Great-Grandchildren: Piper, Willow, Cullen, Anina, Caleb and Noah, A sister, Virginia Sessamen of Bloomington IN., nieces and a nephews, and many friends far and wide. He is predeceased by his wife of 66 years, the late Barbara Bohannon Sargent.
He will be laid to rest in the family plot at Park Lawn Cemetery. A graveside service is planned for Monday December 7th, 1:00pm. There will be no gathering thereafter due to the pandemic. The family is planning a Memorial Service for Harold and Barbara to be held during the Summer of 2021.
