Hanno G. Buning (Buning)

November 12, 1940 — August 3, 2018

Hanno Geert Buning, a resident of Manchester Center, passed away peacefully in his Vermont home on Friday, August 3rd, 2018, surrounded by his family. He was born November 12, 1940 in Amersfoort, Netherlands, to Johan Roelof Anco Buning, a banker, and Alida Henriette Runeman, an artist. He was the second of four brothers (Roel, Jan Willem, Onno). Hanno served two years in the Royal Dutch Air Force, and later graduated from Nijenrode University School of Business. At 26, he emigrated to the U.S., where he began a career in fragrance, establishing himself as a charismatic presence in the industry and staying with the same company (Firmenich) for over 25 years before retiring as their Vice President of Sales in 2001. In 1972, Hanno married his first wife, Joanne Sawers, with whom he had two daughters, Lisa and Dana. In 1979, Hanno discovered a kindred spirit in Roxanne Skinner, and the two began a lifelong partnership, eventually marrying in 1999. In 1982, Hanno broke ground on a log home in Manchester, Vermont. It would be his weekend and summer home, a haven for his family, and the place where he would spend his final days. In retirement, Hanno & Roxanne traveled extensively, often through Holland, seeing much of the world together and making friends along the way. For the last two decades, they split each year between Vermont and Bradenton, Florida. In Bradenton, he loved to walk the Waterlefe golf course at dawn and collect wayward golf balls before heading to the gym. In Manchester, he felled his own trees and split the wood with an axe, and enjoyed many seasons skiing Bromley Mountain with his daughters. Whether jetsetting or grocery shopping, Hanno and Roxanne had fun together. Hanno enjoyed golf, Sudoku, and the Sunday Times crossword. His generous spirit impelled him to volunteer two days a week at the Community Food Cupboard of Manchester, and he was recently presented with a Certificate of Excellence for eight years of service.

Hanno was diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) last October. He spent the past year continuing to make incredible memories with his family, including taking his grandsons on an RV trip in Alaska.

He is survived by his wife, Roxanne, his two daughters, Lisa and Dana, two grandchildren, Ryan and Zachary, and his brother Jan Willem. He is also survived by loving in-laws, nieces, nephews, his former wife, Joanne, and a host of long-time friends. He will be long remembered as a special person by family and friends everywhere.

In lieu of flowers, his family has asked that donations be made to the Community Food Cupboard of Manchester, Vermont. P.O. Box 864, Route 7A, Manchester Center, VT 05255 × (802) 362-0057 http://communityfoodcupboard.org
