Gordon W. Gates (Gates)

Gordon W. Gates, 80, a resident of Furlong Road in North Pownal, VT died Thursday March 9, 2017 at his residence surrounded by his family following a long illness.

He was born in Springfield, VT January 18, 1937. He was the son of the late Walter and Laura (Farrar) Gates. Gordon received his education in Springfield and was a graduate of Springfield High School.

He married the former Lorraine Lillie on February 14, 1970 in Hoosick Falls, NY.

In earlier years Gordy was employed at Thomson Manufacturing in Bennington. He later worked at H. Greenberg and Sons and for many years at Tuttle's in Bennington from which he retired. Following retirement Gordy worked for several years at Leonard's True Value in Pownal, VT.

For 27 years Gordon and Lorraine lived on South Stream Road and for the last 20 years have made their home on Furlong Road in North Pownal.

He enjoyed hunting and fishing and playing cards with his buddies. He especially enjoyed spending time at his camp on Summit Lake with family and lake friends.

Survivors include his wife Lorraine Gates of North Pownal, a daughter, Candace Gates and Scott Morrison of Pownal, VT and a son Randal Gates and Aimee of Shaftsbury, VT. Four grandchildren, Tanner and Aaron Jelley of North Pownal, VT and Emily and Lucy Gates of Shaftsbury. Three sister in laws Shirley Mason, Judy Somerville and Rosemary Lillie and a brother in law Michael Lillie. Along with several nieces, nephews and cousins. He was pre-deceased by a daughter Kimberly Ramey and a brother in law Ralph Lillie.

Friends may call at the Mahar and Son Funeral Home on Monday March 13 from 1:00 to 2:00 p.m.

The funeral will be held at the funeral home on Monday at 2:00 p.m.

The burial will follow in the family lot at Oak Hill Cemetery in Pownal.
