Glenna Mildred Jones, 87, of Bennington passed away quietly on Thursday October 7 at The Centers for Living and Rehabilitation. She was born June 2, 1934, in Saint Albans, Vermont to the late Leon and Dorothea (Hardy) Cross. Glenna received her education in numerous schools in the state as the family slowly migrated south to Bennington. On June 14, 1958, at the age of 24, she married her beloved husband Richard Edward Jones. Together they had three children: Richard, Ida and Timothy.
It was at the Vermont Veterans' Home that Glenna worked from 1957 to 1994. When she retired, she picked up various house cleaning jobs in Bennington. Her favorite household was that of the Mahar family who took great care of her. She often said she loved them so much that she would have done the work for free. On the side, Glenna also enjoyed selling Avon products. She was known as the "Avon Lady" around town and continued to represent the brand through her late 70s.
With her husband and children, Glenna loved to vacation every summer in the Northeast Kingdom where her mother's family was from. They would spend idyllic weeks socializing with her aunts and cousins while camping, fishing, and boating at Lake Memphremagog.
She had a passionate love affair with Bingo. Glenna played 3 to 4 nights a week and rarely came home without a win. She reveled in every aspect of it: The dear friends she made, the suspense of the game and the thrill of winning. She lit up while playing Bingo and that joy infected everyone around her.
Christmas was her favorite holiday. She began immediately afterward and continued throughout the year to hunt for exactly the right gift for every member of her very large family. None of Santa's helpers could keep up with her. Glenna and her husband often worked several jobs each so they could extend their generosity to those in need during the holidays and throughout the year.
Glenna is predeceased by her husband Richard and four brothers: Leon, Leroy, John, and George. She leaves behind her siblings Barbara Allen, Ruby Coyne, Mary Jane Burnell, Albert LaCross of Bennington and Dorothea Hart of Wilmington, NC. She also leaves behind three children and their spouses, Richard, and his wife Polly; Timothy, and his wife Lynette; and Ida Bessette, and her husband Robert. Glenna had 10 grandchildren, 24 great-grandchildren and 10 great-great-grandchildren!
Due to CDC COVID guidance, there will be no calling hours.
A grave-side service will be held at Park Lawn Cemetery at 11:00 am on Saturday October 23.
