Gladys C. Nielson (Coates)

November 30, 1924 — February 13, 2016

Gladys Coates Nielson, age 91, died on Saturday, February 13, 2016, at Sweetbrook Nursing Home in Williamstown, MA. Mrs. Nielson was born in Orwell, VT on November 30, 1924. She was the daughter of Harry Coates and Grace Miller Coates. Her early education was in local Orwell schools and Brandon High School. Upon completion of high school, she attended and graduated from U.V.M.

In 1954 she married David Nielson in Seattle. While he was serving in the Army, she taught school in Ketchikan, Alaska, El Paso, Texas, Augusta, Georgia and Binghamton, NY. They enjoyed traveling during their marriage throughout the U.S., Europe and Africa.

Mrs. Nielson enjoyed sewing, gardening, cooking and with her husband, in younger years, entertaining others in their home. She was constantly exercising, and in her late fifties she earned a black belt in Karate. Both she and David loved and cared for their five dogs throughout their marriage.

Mrs. Nielson was predeceased by her husband in 2007. One brother, Robert Coates and his wife Anita of Jacksonville, FL, and a sister Helen Johnson and her husband Fred of Rutland, VT. She is survived by several nieces and nephews.

In 1987 the Nielsons moved to Bennington to be near her niece Marilyn Marrion.

A Mass of Christian Death and Burial will be held on Tuesday morning, Feb 23, 2016 at 11:00AM at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in North Bennington. Interment will follow in the family lot in St. John's Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Second Chance Animal Shelter, P.O.B. 629 Shaftsbury, VT 05262.

The services are under the direction of the Mahar and Son Funeral Home in Bennington.
