Gerald L. Elwell, 78 of North Bennington, VT, passed away on July 5, 2023 at Brookdale Fillmore Pond in Bennington surrounded by his family. Gerald was born in Troy, New York on September 15, 1944, the son of Francis and Dorothea (Baker) Elwell. He was a graduate of North Bennington High School. Gerald served in the US Marine Corps from 1962-1966. Gerald immediately went to work for the North Bennington Water Department upon his honorable discharge from the Marine Corps. Jerry served the village of North Bennington with pride, integrity,and excellence for over 55 years. Most of those years were as a Superintendent and alongside his life long friend Peter Lauzon. Jerry continued to serve as a water board member up until his time of death. During the last nine months of Jerry’s life, he made being with his cats and petting his dogs a priority everyday. Jerry was a member of the North Bennington Lions Club, the American Legion Post 13 and the Bennington Elks Lodge. He is survived by his sons and daughters-in-law, William and Carrie Elwell of Shaftsbury, VT, Jamie and Malynda Elwell of N. Pownal, VT, his stepson Todd Maddox, his grandchildren; Ali and Nick Zaiac, Will Elwell and Brianna McCorrmick, Nicholas Longar, Patrick McLenithan, Jacob Jelley and Jessica Dewey and his great-grandchildren, Zeke and Ella. He is also survived by a sister, Sandra Hewson- Loveland and his niece and nephew, Deb Hewson and Jerry (Lisa) Mattison,. He was predeceased by his wife, Jane Tudor, who passed away on October 19, 2022. The family would like to thank the staff of Brookdale, Bayada Hospice, the Bennington Rescue Squad, and the Emergency Department at SVMC for his care and the support of their family over the last month of Jerry’s life. Funeral services will be held on Sunday July 9, 2023 at 1:00 PM at the Mahar Funeral Home in Bennington. A graveside service with military honors will follow the funeral service at Park Lawn Cemetery in Bennington. Friends may call at the funeral home on Sunday July 9 from 11:00 AM until the time of service at 1:00 PM.
