George Jacob Sohn, 92, journeyed to his Lord on Sunday, December 13, 2020. He leaves his wife Grace, who he had been married to for 70 wonderful years. His daughters, Susan and husband Michael Zuckerman, Janice and husband Russell Leslie, Catherine and husband Julio Castellanos, Lisa and husband Brian Lent had been by his bedside.
George was born on March 29, 1928 and grew up in Brooklyn, NY. He attended Pratt Institute and St John's University. He was also a Master Sergeant in the National Guard of the II Corps Artillery Headquarters Battery, based in the 14th regiment Armory, Brooklyn, NY.
George was employed as President and later part Owner of Photo-Lettering Inc., a New York typography and graphic arts firm which was a division of Electrographic Corp. based in Chicago, Illinois. He was an Executive Vice-President of that corporation and Chairman of the Board of ITC (International Typeface corporation) a company jointly owned by Photo-Lettering and Lubalin Burns & Co. NY.
George was a member of the NY Type Directors Club, a corporate member of the NY Production Men's Club, and a Board member of the Typographers Association of NY. He also was a member of ATypl (Association Typographique International) based in Basel, Switzerland. These business associations allowed George and Grace to travel extensively throughout Europe.
He was an active member of the church when he and his family lived in Crugers, NY, in Essex, CT and at the Second Congregational Church in Bennington, Vt.
George's family was most important to him and he enjoyed outings and adventures with his children, 12 grandchildren and their families, including 9 great grandchildren. George passed on his love for saltwater fishing, woodworking, and the outdoors. He was an avid collector of fossil and crystal specimens and loved sharing his knowledge. George has enjoyed spending each day living in Vermont for the past 18 years.
