George C. "Nick" Nickerson, 97 years old, retired Vermont State Police Lieutenant and long time Station Commander at the Bethel barracks passed away peacefully at the Vermont Veterans' Home on July 7, 2024. He was born in Millville, NJ on June 15, 1927, son of the late Calvin and Margaret (Brown) Nickerson. George graduated from Walter A. Wood High School, Hoosick Falls, NY in 1947 after serving in the Navy during World War II. He farmed his parent's farm and at Fillmore Farms in Bennington until being called back into the Marine Corp Reserve during the Korean Conflict. Upon honorable discharge from the service, he became a member of the Vermont State Police in January 1954. He married Carol Jean Bonville, April 24, 1954, at St. Ambrose Church in Latham, NY. They just celebrated their 70th anniversary. "Nick" was assigned to the St. Johnsbury barracks, then in 1955 was transferred to Derby. He was then sent to Barton to establish the first State Police Outpost in that area. In 1960 he was promoted to Corporal and stationed in Rutland as Patrol Commander. "Nick" later was promoted to Station Commander in the newly established Bethel State Police barracks, serving at Bethel until his retirement in 1982 after 29 years of service. Lt. Nickerson attended the F.B.I. National Academy, 82nd session in Washington, D.C., and was an original member of the State Police Mountain Rescue Team formed in the early 1960's. He continued his education by attending courses at Norwich University, Babson College, and Castleton State College. "Nick" was a past President of the Vermont Associates of the F.B.I. National Academy in 1969. He was also a member of the American Legion Post 13. "Nick's" main interest was his family and his work. After retiring in 1982 he returned to the Nickerson Homestead-Farm South of Bennington which he loved and was in the family for over 60 years. He is survived by his loving wife Carol J. Nickerson and devoted daughter, Anna L. Nickerson, both of Bennington; and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his sister Paula Prescott. At the request of Mr. Nickerson, there will be no services. His burial will be in the family lot in the Old Bennington Cemetery. If friends desire, contributions in memory of Nick may be made directly to the Vermont Veterans' Home (Activity Fund). The family would like to express their extreme gratitude to the staff at the Vermont Veterans' Home for their professionalism and compassionate care they gave to Nick.
