George F. Griffis, age 73 a resident of North Bennington, died on Wednesday, May 8, 2019 at the Centers for Living and Rehabilitation in Bennington, following a courageous battle with cancer, surrounded by his loved ones.
He was born in Bennington on October 31, 1945, and was the son of the late Dudley and Mary (Burns) Griffis.
He was raised in Arlington, and attended Arlington schools, and is a graduate of Arlington High School. George proudly served in the Air Force, during the Viet Nam Era. When he wasn't spending time hiking, hunting or fishing in his beloved Green Mountains, he could be found playing guitar, drawing and painting. He enjoyed reading Stephen King novels and books about American History.
He is survived by three children: George Griffis of Bristol, CT, Mackenzie Rouleau (Tony) of Greenwich, NY and Sam (Sage) Griffis of Salem, NY.
George leaves his nine grandchildren: Gavin, Connor, Rory, Dylan, Kyle, Hannah, Will, Chloe, and Wesley. He has two brothers: Arnold Griffis (Tina) of Vermont, Thomas Griffis (Jim) of Florida. George is also survived by his former wife and close friend Heather Reid of Greenwich, NY and several nieces and nephews. He is predeceased by one daughter, Grace Griffis, one sister, Colleen Hastings, and two brothers: Bill Griffis and Dudley Griffis.
At George's request, the family will host a Celebration of Life with food, music and friendship at the family home, 521 North Road, Greenwich, NY on Saturday, June 22, from 1:00PM until 6:00PM. All are welcome, and are asked to bring a dish to pass and a story to share.
