George E. Gilman

George E. Gilman, 76, a former resident of Bennington, VT and more recently of Tucson, Arizona died Friday August 20, 2021 at the Albany Medical Center in Albany, NY following a brief illness.

He was born in Boston, MA September 17, 1944. He was the son of the late Elliott Shaw Gilman and Beatrice (Lafoe) Gilman. He received his education in Bennington and attended Bennington College. He later received a bachelor's and two Master's degrees from the University of Arizona and one from Stanford University.

In August of 2021 he married his longtime soulmate and companion Julie Thayer ( Wallman) in a small, lovely ceremony in Bennington, Vt.

For many years George sold real estate. He retired from Amphitheater Middle School in Tucson, Arizona where he worked as a middle school counselor.

He was a true renaissance man who was a creative thinker, enjoyed singing in the choir, playing the drums, which he did professionally, enjoyed art, and theater. Music ran through his veins. His life was filled with music day and night.

Survivors include his wife, Julia Thayer of Tucson, his cousins Gary Harbour (Gail) of Bennington, Vt., David Lafoe (Sally) of Norton, Vt., Richard Lafoe of Newport, Vt. , Julie's children Chris Thayer, of San Diego California, Emily Cain and her husband Heath, their children Elizabeth, Logan, and Sandra-Mae of Warwick, Rhode Island, and many dear friends.

There will be no calling hours or funeral services.
