Gene Blasen
Age 90
Resident of Harlan Road, North Bennington, Vermont died on 6.14.16 at SVMC surrounded by his adoring family.
Gene was born in Brooklyn, New York and graduated from Lafayette High School. He played on the Varsity Football team, Catcher on the Varsity Baseball team, Gymnastics team and played Intramural Ice Hockey. Gene also headed many artistic projects for the school.
After graduation, Gene enlisted in the US Navy and served in WWII. After an honorable discharge, he enlisted in the US Marine Reserve. He attended Pratt Institute and The Arts Student League in NYC. Gene also played Semi-Pro Hockey on the Manhattan Arrows team.
Gene worked for over 36 years as the Art Director at J. Walter Thompson Advertising Agency on the Ford Motor and Truck, RCA and Pan Am accounts.
Gene was Assistant Director of Winter Sports at Grossinger's in Liberty, NY. As a lover of sports, he was an avid fan of the NY Giants, Yankees ad New York Rangers. He also coached his son Lloyd's hockey team in Katonah, NY. His hobbies included jazz, collecting old radios, bagatelle games and antiques. Other hobbies included golf, painting, signs and drawing personalized greeting cards for family and friends.
Since living in Vermont for over 30 years, Gene was a member of the American Legion and was on the Board of Directors at The Park McCullough House for 4 terms. Gene was also the former Editorial Cartoonist for the Bennington Banner for many years.
Gene is survived by his devoted and loving wife of 59 years, Joan Barnett Blasen of North Bennington, his loving son Lloyd Blasen (Janine) of NYC, his loving daughter Gwen Blasen of North Bennington and his grandchildren Rachel and David Blasen of NYC. He was pre-deceased by his parents Rachel and Morris Blasen and his brother Edward Blasen of NYC.
Gene had an enormous sense of humor, humanity and compassion for others. He will be sorely missed and indelibly etched in our hearts forever.
