Frederick Louis Sweet

Frederick (Fred) Louis Sweet, 81, of North Bennington peacefully passed away August 24, 2023 in North Bennington at his home. He was born in Bennington on March 24, 1942, to the late Richard A. Sweet and Anna M. Sweet (Harrington). Fred was a 1960 graduate of Bennington High in Bennington, VT. Fred married Beverly C. Sweet (Matheson) on June 23, 1961. Fred joined the National Guard right out of high school and was a member for 8 years. He worked in manufacturing as a production worker at Bijur, Globe Union, and Stanley Tools for the majority of his life, retiring from UST in 2004. At an early age, he worked at Old Benn Wood Crafters and HT Cushman; this sparked his interest in woodworking. After retirement, one could find Fred working in his woodworking shop at his home. Fred also enjoyed painting, paint by diamonds, crocheting, walking, hunting, and fishing. He is survived by his wife Beverly Sweet, two daughters Starr Volkmer and Tawnee Bortell (Dana) both of Bennington, grandchildren Kenneth Volkmer (Lenora) of Pownal, Charles Volkmer (Courtney) of Bennington, Paul Volkmer of New York City, Mark Volkmer (Allysa) of Rotterdam, NY, Shannon Cote (James) of Shaftsbury, and Nataya Cross (fiancé Richard Campilongo) of Bennington. Great grandchildren Vance, Vade, and Vic Volkmer, Bradley Volkmer, Elizabeth Volkmer, Aidan and Ayvah Cote, Xander Greene, Melody, Rowan, and Weslyn Campilongo, brother Roger Sweet of Hoosick Falls, and several nieces and nephews. He is also survived by his beloved cat Buddy Boy. Fred is predeceased by his parents Richard Sweet and Anna Sweet, brothers Richard H. Sweet and Robert F. Sweet, and sister Rose Sweet. There will be no calling hours at his request. A graveside ceremony at the White Chapel Cemetery will take place at 11:00am on Friday, September 1st. Followed by a celebration of life at the Moose Club at 12:00pm.
