Mrs. Florence Howard, 87, widow of Arthur F. Howard, a former resident of Arlington and Shaftsbury, died Friday, April22, 2016 at the Watson House in North Bennington.
Born in Winchendon, MA on May 16, 1928 she was the daughter of the later Vernon W. and Vera (Morris) Field. She attended elementary and high school in Arlington, VT and was a graduate of Arlington High School class of 1947. She later attended Castleton State College and received her B.S. Degree in 1952. Mrs. Howard also attended the University of Vermont and the University of New Hampshire where she studied Library Science.
Mr. & Mrs. Howard were married in Shaftsbury in 1981. Mr. Howard died March 16, 1996.
In earlier years Mrs. Howard taught elementary school in the area for fourteen years. She was a school librarian for two years and at the time of her retirement she was the librarian at McCullough Library in North Bennington, where she had been librarian for ten years.
Her many interests included house decorating, travel and genealogy.
Mrs. Howard was a member of the Vermont Society of Mayflower Descendants, the Huguenot Society, Daughters of Colonial Wars, the John Alden Society, DAR, the Bennington Museums Matteson Congress and the American Legion Auxiliary.
She became a member of the Congregational Church, now the Federated Church of East Arlington at the age of twelve. This is the same church where her great "grandfather, The Reverend A.C. Field had been minister in the later 1800's.
Survivors include numerous cousins.
Memorial services celebrating the life of Florence Field Howard will be held at the East Arlington Federated Church on Thursday, April 28, 2016 at 2:00 PM with Rev. Kathy Clark, pastor, officiating.
Private committal services will be held at the family lot in South Shaftsbury Cemetery at the convenience of the family.
