Ethel Menke Heil, aged 100 and a resident of Pownal, Vermont passed away peacefully on April 3, 2024. Born July 27, 1923, Ethel was the daughter of Peter and Caroline Menke of New York City. She attended elementary and high school in Newton in the city of New York graduating valedictorian of her high school in 1941. Ethel continued her education in Flushing, New York at Queens College and graduated cum laude with a Bachelor of Science in mathematics in June of 1944. Ethel was married in June of 1946 to the late Eugene Heil. The couple moved to Pownal, Vermont in 1955. After many years she decided to utilize her educational background and taught mathematics first in the Arlington, Vermont school system then in the Bennington school system. Ethel completed her career as a Guidence Councelor after receiving her Masters of Education from North Adam’s State College in Massachusetts in 1972. Survivors include Ethel’s children, Greg Heil and his wife Terry of Providence Forge, Virginia, Timothy Heil of Pownal, Vermont , Susan Maloney and her husband Jim of Weathersfield, Vermont, Gary Heil of Leominster, Massachusetts and Kristy Heil of Virginia. Ethel is also survived by her five grandchildren, Robert Maloney, Shawn Maloney, Erin Maloney, Evan Heil and Eric Heil. She also has eleven great grandchildren.
