NORTH BENNINGTON
Elmer J. Bevis, 105, a resident of North Bennington, died Sunday, September 19, 2021 at Bennington Health and Rehabilitation following a brief illness.
Born in Bennington on February 29, 1916, he was the son of the late Owen and Mabel (VanKleeck) Bevis. Elmer received his education at the North Bennington school. He married the former Alice Matteson in North Bennington on September 18, 1940. Mrs. Bevis died June 30, 2002.
Elmer grew up during the Recession and as a youngster his first job was cutting wood and selling it around the area. He later got a job at the H.T. Cushman Company in North Bennington where he stayed for many years until the time of his retirement. Following his retirement he was employed as a courier for Merchants Bank in North Bennington.
Elmer was affectionally known as "Aubie" to neighborhood children. An avid outdoorsman, he enjoyed hunting, trapping and fishing. He was a life member of both Elks Lodge 567 in Bennington and Ducks Unlimited.
Survivors include two nephews and their spouses, Lee and Susan Harrington of Shaftsbury and Peter and Lois Ann Harrington of Charlotte. Elmer was predeceased by his son, James Bevis, who died June 1, 2015.
Graveside services will be held on Tuesday, September 28 at 1pm, at Grandview Cemetery in North Bennington.
