Ellen Regina Toole (O'Shaughnessy)

Nina was born on April 11, 1921, in Columbus, Ohio, to Jeremiah Aloyious O'Shaughnessy and Ellen Regina Fahy O'Shaughnessy. The eighth of nine children, Nina grew up in a rambunctious household that nevertheless gathered every evening at the dinner table (boys in jackets) at the appointed hour. Nina first matriculated at St. Joseph's Academy and then at St. Mary's of the Springs in Columbus before attending The Ohio State University, where she was a proud member of the Kappa Kappa Gamma sorority.
Following the death of her father in 1944, Nina joined American Airlines, where she worked as a reservation agent and then as a stewardess until 1951, when she married Theodore T. Toole. Together, Nina and Ted raised four children of whom they were most proud: Thad, Ellen, Kevin and Christopher. In 1972, the family, which had already moved several times, relocated to Dorset, Vermont and became parishioners of St. Paul Catholic Church and members of the Dorset Field Club.
Nina thoroughly enjoyed people and regaling others with stories of growing up in Columbus and, later, of helping to raise different nieces and nephews, many of whom have recalled that they never celebrated a birthday without a telephone call from their Aunt Nina.. A woman of style, Nina always strived to look her best, whether the occasion was weekly Mass or picking up something at Rite Aid. When Ted, with whom she enjoyed 65 years of marriage, passed away in December of 2016, she refocused her energies on the weddings of her two grandchildren, Thad and Caroline Toole.
Nina was predeceased by her husband, Ted, and earlier by her parents and eight siblings: Jerry, Margaret, Joe, Tom, Jane, Bob, Dick and Bill. She is survived by son Thad III and his wife, Becky, of Exton, Pennsylvania; daughter Ellen Toole of New York, New York; son Kevin O'Toole and his wife, Nancy, of Dorset, Vermont, and son Christopher O'Toole of Boca Raton, Florida. She also leaves two grandchildren on whom she doted: Thad Toole IV of Exton, Pennsylvania and his wife, Rachel, and Caroline Bach and her wife, Julie, of Charlottesville, Virginia.
A Liturgy of Christian Death will take place at Christ Our Savior (St. Paul Catholic Church) at 398 Bonnet Street in Manchester, Vermont on Thursday, April 5, 2018 at 1:00 pm., followed by a reception at the residence at 168 Meadow Lane in Dorset. Internment next to her late husband Ted at Arlington National Cemetery is being scheduled. Guestbook condolences may be made at www.maharandsonfuneralhome.net.
