Elizabeth Ann Bissell

Elizabeth A. (Shovan) Bissell 77, a resident of Bennington, Vermont passed away peacefully surrounded by her loved ones on August 15th, 2023 at her home, following a long illness. Elizabeth (Bette) was born July 2, 1946, she was the daughter of Stephen J. Shovan and Barbara (Wood) Shovan in Montague, Massachusetts and brought up in Orange, MA. Bette attended and graduated from Ralph Mahar Regional High School in Orange, MA in 1964. She later attended Greenfield Community College and graduated from Katherine Gibbs School in Boston in 1969. Upon graduation, Bette worked for a law firm in West Hartford, CT. In 1972 she met Douglas Bissell and they were married on August 19, 1973. They were together for 50 years. Bette moved to Bennington, VT to be with Doug. There she worked numerous jobs, including Bennington College, Dr. John Holbach D.D.S. as an assistant, then at the Federal Building in ASCS (Agriculture) office with Robert Rudd and Chris Horton. She then worked as a paraprofessional at Mt. Anthony Union High School working with special needs children. She later retired in 2003. Bette’s interests and hobbies included knitting, but mostly she enjoyed spending time with family. Survivors include her husband Doug, their daughter Rebecca Ann (Daniel Rodriguez) Bissell, grandson Brandon, her brother Alan Shovan (Marie), sister-in-law Wanda Shovan of Clearwater, FL, brother-in-laws Dean Bissell, George Liset, sister-in-law Sylvia (Bissell) Liset, and four nieces and two nephews. Elizabeth was predeceased by her parents and brother Ronald. Friends and Relatives are invited to a visitation at Mahar Funeral Home in Bennington from 5pm till 7pm on Friday August 18th, 2023. A memorial service for Bette will be held at 2pm on Saturday August 19th, 2023 at the 2nd Congregational Church in Bennington.
