Edwin H. Luce, 93 North Bennington resident died Sunday, September 19, 2021 at his home.
Born in South Pomfret on November 6, 1927 to Wesley J. and Lena A. (Wood) Luce. Edwin received his primary education in South Pomfret and graduated in 1945 from Woodstock High. Following graduation, he enlisted in the army, serving in the Philippines as part of World War II and was honorably discharged. Edwin was married to Catherine Theresa Donovan of New Haven, CT on April 16, 1955 in New Haven. He worked at Polygraphic Company as a four-color pressman, Jard Company as the quality control manager and later in life at Bennington College in campus safety.
Edwin was the nineteenth person to join the North Bennington Fire Department and served it proudly for 60 years. He also served as an umpire for the Nor-Shaft Little League, and as a North Bennington Village Trustee. Many will remember him for how he watched over his beloved village of North Bennington from his front porch. Edwin loved spending time with his family, bowling, playing dominos and cards. He also was an avid hunter especially enjoying deer and turkey hunting. He attended a World War II honor flight to Washington D.C. and the WWII war monument.
His wife, Catherine T. Luce, parents, Wesley J. and Lena A. Luce, brother, David Luce and wife Edna Luce, and niece, Patricia Barton, predecease him.
Survivors include daughter Kathleen M. Graef and husband Ronald of Kissimmee, FL; son Edwin M. Luce and wife Cindy of North Bennington; 4 grandchildren, Joshua and wife Nicole, Laura and husband Justin, Amanda and husband Tim, and Wesley and wife Kristen; 4 great-grandchildren, Layne, Alexandra, Aidan and David, niece, Louise Blakney and husband Jerry, and friend Maryann Carubia.
Friends may call on Friday, September 24, 2021 from 5:00 to 7:00 pm at Mahar & Son Funeral Home. A mass will be held at 11am on Saturday, September 25, 2021 at St. John the Baptist Church in North Bennington. Burial will take place in the family lot in St. John the Baptist Cemetery. The family requests that you wear a mask at services.
