Edward J. Pelz

His residence was at Brookdale Fillmore Pond, a senior community in Bennington VT. He had previously lived in Berlin NY and New York City for many years.
He was born May 26, 1918 in Seattle, Wash. His parents, Lois Campbell and Victor Hugo Pelz, both raised in Seattle, met in high school.
Ed attended grammar school in New Orleans, Palo Alto, Chestnut Hill PA, New York City, and Hastings-on-Hudson NY. He was a graduate of Dobbs Ferry NY high school and Colorado College ('38). He was a 1939 Rhodes Scholar from Colorado. World War II prevented his attendance at Brasenose College of Oxford University (class of '39) and cut short his attendance at Columbia Business School (class of '43).
Ed was a human resources executive for the New York City Newspaper Publishers Association (1938-42) and for The New York Times (1946-83). He was officer-in-charge (1942-45) of U.S Navy gun crews on supply ships such as SS William Johnson in the Atlantic, Mediterranean and Persian Gulf, leaving at the end of 1945 as a lieutenant USNR.
He was a member of the Association of American Rhodes Scholars, Society for Human Resource Management, American Economic Association, Phi Beta Kappa, Sigma Chi, and Alpha Kappa Psi.
Ed married Caroline Lockwood Duncombe of Briarcliff Manor NY in 1942. Full-time residents of New York City (1946-1987), they were also residents of the Taconic Valley for 55 years " part-time in Stephentown NY (1957-87 as owners of half of the former George Holcomb farm), and in Berlin NY from 1987 until moving full-time to Bennington VT in 2016. Caroline died June 28, 2007.
Survivors include daughters Cami Pelz Elbow of Seattle and Patricia Pelz Hart of Aliso Viejo CA; son Sanford M. Pelz of New York City and Hewlett Harbor NY; grandchildren Abigail Elbow of Anchorage AK, Daphne Hart of Denver, Ben Elbow of Anchorage, and Chris and Jon Pelz of New York City; great-granddaughters Elizabeth (Izzy) Elbow and Helen (Hettie) Elbow of Anchorage; and nine nieces and nephews. A daughter, Margaret Livingston Pelz, died in 1978.
There will be an informal reception on Sunday, July 1 at 3 pm at Brookdale Fillmore Pond, 300 Village Lane, Bennington VT.
Burial of the ashes in the Berlin NY Community Cemetery will be at a later date.
