Edward James Helgert II, 79, a resident of Gage Street in Bennington passed away peacefully on Saturday December 14, 2019 doing what he loved best, driving, having a cigarette and heading to Stewarts for coffee.
He was born in Bethel, CT February 5, 1940. He was the son of the late Edward J. Helgert and Jeanette (Tooley) Helgert. He received his education in CT.
Ed served in the United States Army in Vietnam.
He married the former Patricia Alonzo on July 28, 1971. Mrs. Helgert died on October 6, 2010.
In earlier years, Ed owned and operated Fireside Upholstery in Hoosick Falls. He also drove a school bus for the Hoosick Falls school system.
Ed enjoyed working on classic cars, country music and collecting antiques, old lanterns and Budweiser steins. He also enjoyed reading and watching documentaries on the Civil War. Ed was very close with his children, he and his son Ed would talk by phone every evening.
Survivors include his children, Lyn Parker and her husband Tom of Buskirk, New York and Edward J. Helgert III of Brunswick, NY. Several foster children. Two sisters, Joan Shannon of Bethel, CT and Nell Westlo of West Haven, CT along with several nieces, nephews and cousins.
A memorial service will be held at the Mahar and Son Funeral Home in Bennington on Thursday December 19, at 1:00 p.m.
Friends may call at the funeral home on Thursday from 11:00 a.m. until the time of the service.
